- Symptoms:
Pain could be experienced in abdomen. Patient can also feel bloated, tired or experience difficulties while urinating. They could also lose weight.
- Diagnosis:
Ovarian cancer can be diagnosed by ultrasound or CA125 test. Ultrasound is done on the abdomen. However, both tests don’t give a definite result. Surgeon operates on the patient to ascertain the presence of cancerous cells in ovaries after both tests give a positive result.
- Treatment:
The stage of the cancer and patient’s age determines the treatment for the disease. Surgery is used in a limited way if the patient is young and is in the initial stage of cancer. Patients who are in the advanced stage of cancer have to get their ovaries and women removed. More tissues are removed if cancer has spread to other areas. After surgery, chemotherapy is conducted to kill the cancerous cells that were left during the surgery. It can also be used first so as to reduce the size of tumor that makes it easier to remove.
Out of every five women having ovarian cancer, two can be cured. If the diagnosis is done when the cancer is limited to ovaries, about 75 percent of them can be cured. However, the cure rate drops to 35 percent if the cancer has spread to pelvic cavity.
